Monitoring your child’s blood sugar level

Treatment of type 1 diabetes involves checking blood sugar levels regularly and responding to the results. Controlling blood sugar levels effectively helps kids with diabetes, feel well, grow, and develop normally. It also helps in reducing the risk of long-term diabetes complications.

The treatment plan for diabetes will recommend how many times a day one need to check blood sugar levels and which is the best way to monitor the effectiveness of your child’s insulin plan. The diabetes health care team will generally let you know what your child’s target blood sugar levels are.

Kids with type 1 diabetes are advised to test their blood sugar levels with a blood glucose meter at least four times a day. They will need to check more often on sick days, days with intense exercise and during travel. Your care team might also recommend that your child should use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). It is basically a wearable device that can measure blood sugar every few minutes around the clock.

In most cases, a frequent CGM blood sugar readings can help you and your care team to do an even better job of troubleshooting and properly adjusting your child’s diabetes management plan to improve blood sugar control.

Where a blood sugar meter or CGM only measures the blood sugar level at the moment of testing, another blood test i.e. the glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c test) shows how blood sugar levels have been running over the past 3 months.

Treating and managing diabetes sometimes can seem quite overwhelming. But you can always take help from the diabetes health care team. Your child’s diabetes management plan should be such which is easy to understand, in detail and precisely written down for your easy reference. Your diabetes care team also helps in keeping track of the latest research developments and will introduce you with new products as they become available.
