Leuprolide Stimulation test: Information for Parents

This test requires around 4 hours from start to completion.

WHEN IS THIS TEST REQUIRED?

The test is done for evaluation of early (precocious) puberty or delayed puberty. In this test, Leuprolide is given which stimulates pituitary gland to produce LH and FSH hormones. The levels of these hormones are tested at specific intervals during this test.

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR THE TEST?

There is no requirement of fasting for this test. He/she can eat normally prior to the test. Your child can bring a small toy/book with them to keep them comfortable during the test.

WHAT EXACTLY CAN WE EXPECT?

An IV cannula will be placed in your child’s arm by an experienced nurse. Leuprolide medication will be given in the subcutaneous (fatty) tissue. Your child is allowed to do normal activities during the course of the test. You must return to the nurse for collection of blood samples at specified timings after medication administration as specified by your Endocrinologist. At the end of the test, your child’s cannula will be removed and cleaned with antiseptic.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO AFTER THE TEST?

You can do daily activities and head home after the test..

WHEN WILL THE RESULTS BE AVAILABLE?

The test results would be ready in couple of days time.
