Growth hormone injection treatment is basically prescribed for children or kids who have been diagnosed with growth hormone (GH) deficiency and other similar conditions causing short stature.

There are a number of other tests that must be conducted first to confirm Growth Hormone deficiency, Turner Syndrome, or other conditions for which GH therapy is suggested. These tests generally include stimulation tests, MRIs and X-rays.

How does it work?

For a child to grow, there is a gland deep inside the brain, called the pituitary which must release enough growth hormone(GH). It’s mostly during deep sleep that the natural growth hormone is released.

There are many other factors that influence the release of growth hormone, including nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress, medications, blood sugar levels and also other hormones present in the body.

In case a child’s body does not produce or release enough Growth Hormone, the child may have several symptoms, the most noticeable being slow or no growth or facial features that make them look a lot younger than his or her peers.

While being small has no effect on a child’s intelligence, it may cause self-esteem issues and also interfere with the development of matured social skills. This is one of the major reasons that growth hormone treatment is prescribed to help a child reach his or her fullest growth potential both in terms of height and in personal development.

What to expect in Growth Hormone Treatment?

The main thing that you should expect is growth. It takes around 6 months to realize any height differences. There are a few other things that you may notice:

1. You will notice that your child will outgrow his or her shoes quickly.
2. An increase in appetite is common in case your child had a poor appetite before treatment.
3. Your child might look skinnier as there is an increase in lean body mass and decrease of fat mass with this treatment.
